The Finger Lakes Finns
Annual Scholarship Award Criteria

The Finger Lakes Finns is offering awards of five hundred dollars ($500) each to support and encourage promising scholars in our area who are of Finnish heritage. This award is for area high school seniors, payable upon successful completion of the first year at an accredited institution of higher learning.

The Criteria for Application

  • U.S. citizen of Finnish heritage
     
  • High school senior, with preference for students enrolled in the Central Finger Lakes*
     
  • Accepted for admission to an accredited institution of higher learning
     
  • Demonstrated interest and involvement in school/community activity

*The Central Finger Lakes, for this purpose, is identified as within Tompkins, Seneca, Tioga, Schuyler, Chemung, and Cayuga counties.

The Application Process

Applicants must provide the completed application form [below] with:

  • Copy of birth certificate or naturalization
     
  • School guidance letter confirming current enrollment status
     
  • Copy of a letter of acceptance by an accredited institution (Ex.: College, University)
     
  • Description of your goals, values, and objectives in higher education
     
  • A list of school and community achievements, awards, and activities
     
  • Name two (2) non-family member character references
     
  • A brief essay on your Finnish heritage/experience (For example: What does your Finnish heritage mean to you? What does it mean to you to be Finnish?)

All applicants and their schools will be notified not later than June 1. Payment of the award will be made upon completion of first year of higher education in good standing. Recipients will be required to present a letter or certification of academic status in good standing from their institution prior to receiving the payment.
